Sunday is for Sitting

This morning I found Noah on his tummy. This is the first time he's rolled over at home (I think it's easier in the pack and play than in his crib).

He was in a surprisingly good mood, considering the tummyness.

We went to the Bux-Mont Jewish festival today just in time to see our Rabbi compete in the Rabbis pie eating contest. We think he performed admirably. They were really big pies.

There were lots of activities for kids, but Noah is still too little for things like face painting and parachute games. Instead, we practiced sitting and played in the grass.

Noah is getting much better at sitting up unassisted. Actually, we always have to assist him into a sitting position, but he can stay seated without our help for up to 30 seconds or so. Especially if there is something interesting like grass to play with!

Also, did you notice his wristband? They are serious about security at the Bux-Mont Jewish Festival. EVERYONE has to wear a wristband. Except our friends, who just walked in a different side of the field and didn't see the registration table. Huh.

After a fun day, Chad and Noah finished with a few rounds of old McDonald.

Yay weekends. :)

bouncing and bananas

Noah went to his first kiddie birthday party today (happy birthday Rebecca!). Pictures to follow.

For now, after working up an appetite,

Noah enjoyed some more bananas.

This time with rice cereal mixed in. I don't think he noticed. He was so all about the bananas he started to fuss whenever I took the spoon away to put more food on it.

Go Bananas!!

He loved them!

In addition to grabbing the bowl and trying to lick it, he did such exciting things as opening his mouth and letting me stick a spoon in there. Of course, I could not capture this on film as I'm by myself and my non-spoon hand was totally covered in bananas after about 30 seconds.

As was he, up to about his elbows. Turns out banana mush doesn't really show up on camera. Huh.

Next up: spinach? Give the kid a challenge?

Diaper Madness

At night we put a doubler in Noah's diaper, which keeps him nice and dry, but makes his already large diaper gigantic. How gigantic? These are not v-neck pajamas.

Misc.

Noah woke up early today, trying to roll over into the side of his crib. Ooops. Luckily he was able to back to sleep for a little nap.

Also, more sweet potatoes. Yum!

Also, Noah says "Go Badgers!!!"

Also, Mommy says: my god. Noah is so big!!

Sweet!

Potato, that is!

Noah got his first taste of the orange stuff today. He seemed to really like it, and was certainly more excited than he is about cereal.

He kept grabbing for the dish and frantically licking.

How exciting! Something he likes!

In other news, Noah helped Daddy with a programming challenge today.

Of course, by "helped," I mean drooled on the keys for long enough for Chad to take care of something...

Memorial Day Weekend

Noah had a great time seeing his friends at Meredith's house today.

With beautiful weather and plenty of babies to stare at and talk to.

And of course, their toys to play with. Noah developed a quick love affair with Gavin's giraffe...

Mommy and daddy had a great time as well. Yay summer!

Back on the trail

We went out to Nockamixon state park today, for a hike in the beautiful weather.

Seriously. Look how cute he is in that hat. Wouldn't you take him outside at any opportunity?

Nockamixon state park is very nice, and we enjoyed a few trails around the lake. There were a few boats on the lake and we didn't see anyone else on the trail.

On the way to the park we went to a few farms to find some local meat. Noah got to see a donkey and a horse for the first time. He was considerably more interested in the donkey, which came right up to us (probably expecting a treat).

As exciting as this was, it was a little bit of a letdown. The donkey lived at a bison farm, and we were kind of hoping to see some of his big hairy friends. Maybe next time we'll ask to go out back and meet them, assuming we like our bison steaks and want to come back.

Sleepy Mommy

We let Noah stay up past his bed time tonight so we could go out to dinner.

Honestly, I look more tired than he does. Perhaps my bedtime should be moved up to 6:30...

Tummy Sleep!!

When I arrived to pick up Noah at day care today, I found him sleeping on his tummy!!

The teachers had put him to sleep on his back, and said he rolled in his sleep. I was thrilled. This is the first back - to - front rollover, as well as the first time he's rolled over without us setting him up in some ridiculously uncomfortable position he can't really help but want to roll out of. I was also happy he stayed sleeping, which *might* just mean that when he rolls over during the night he won't wake up...

At any rate, yay Noah. :)

No teeth yet

But we brush the gums before bed, and he likes the gum brush almost as much as his toothbrush...

Rice and Bouncing

Cereal, take two:

He's all about the cereal, happy to open his mouth and lick the spoon. He just doesn't really know how to swallow it.

Because of this, most of it ends up on his bib.

Noah says "yum!"

In other news, we decided Noah is old enough for the doorway bouncer, so we went to get one today. He seemed to love it, happily buzzing his lips and turning around in circles.

He stopped for a brief conversation with Max, who didn't seem to know what to make of the baby hanging from the molding.

Un-photographed: gardening with the baby strapped to my back, tummy time with bee toy, reading books, napping in bed with mommy and daddy, running on the Wissahickon trail. Sundays are great! And long, when you get up at 5:30am.

Best meal so far!

Noah had a very exciting culinary day today. We started out with an eggplant course, trying out his new high chair. We're still waiting for the cushion and baby harness to arrive, but he only needs a bit of help to sit in the chair without them.

For lunch, we blew his mind by feeding him some rice cereal.

Real food! Messy baby!

And Silverware!

It was lots of fun for us, and overall, I would say he approved. He didn't swallow much, but seemed happy about the process.

And we get to try again tomorrow!

Trombone Chops

Noah is practicing so he can grow up to play low brass like his aunts.

I don't know where that ear curl came from either.

Toothbrush

Playing with his toothbrush incorporates two of Noah's favorite activities - grabbing things and chewing on things.

Yup - we're all about oral hygiene around here.

4 Month Visit

We took Noah to his 4 month doctor's visit today.

His favorite part was when we let him destroy the paper on the examination table.

He weighed in at a whopping 17 lbs, 4.5 oz, and measured 26 and 1/4 inches. He's huge! :) He was a very good sport about his shots, and we got the go-ahead to start solids soon.

Really?

Our baby?

He's old enough for solids?

Holy crap.

Happy Mother's Day!

We had a great day today, celebrating Mother's day and Noah's four month birthday. In the morning we practiced sitting up (still very shaky).

Then we went out for Mommy's favorite breakfast (honey wheat pancakes with lemon curd, raspberries, and caramel sauce).

And then off to Evansburg State park for a hike.

This gave us a good opportunity to enjoy the beautiful day, and to enjoy how cute Noah is in his little hat.

Also, the licking. Apparently at four months licking is the MOST FUN EVER.

What a great day!

Another Saturday

Noah continues to become more dexterous. He can purposefully grab at things and shake his rattle around.

No, I don't know why he needs to pull his shirt up to do this.

We went to REI today to find a hiking carrier for Noah. We hoped no one noticed his insistence on licking the merchandise...

He was a great sport overall, allowing both of us to carry him around the store in three different carriers. Apparently it wiped him out though.

Nothing like curling up with a good book...

Grass!

Noah got to learn about grass today.

The grass is fun because you can rip it out of the ground, and also because you can grab it and try to pull yourself over onto your side.

It was really neat to watch him try to figure it out. That and stand by vigilantly to prevent him from eating any grass.

Oh did you notice we need to mow the lawn desperately? I think I've noticed some jungle creatures moving in...

It fits!!

Or at least, is close enough.

The distinguished gentleman from Pennsylvania is happy his outfit for Sarah and Al's wedding is going to work out just fine.

Mine!

Don't come between a boy and his toothbrush...

Halfway there

Noah has started to be interested in rolling over. When he's on his back he will sometimes lift up his knees and then swing them over to the side, rolling onto one side.

He is nowhere near to completing the roll onto his stomach, but sideways Noah is pretty cute so I'll take it for now.

Basement Update

Noah chilled in the basement while I worked out today. (Note, because that sounds bad: I worked out in the basement, 2 feet out of this picture. I did not leave him in the basement and go to the gym)

Actually, after a few minutes it became pretty clear that my working out was going to wake him up, so I let him snooze and went to clean the kitchen.

I'll go back and finish later, after he goes to sleep. I promise.

Hey, speaking of basements, how about a long overdue basement update? Well, we've got the new wall spackled and primed (paint to follow.... someday... ), and the carpet installed.

And the equipment is up and running. It's actually a pretty nice little space.

Clearly unfinished, but very functional for the time being. I really appreciate having it!

He's a uniter

Thanks to his popularity with both cats and babies, Chad was able to bring Max and Noah together for the first time.

Who knows - perhaps in the future they will actually be interested in each other?

Laughing

Chad can make Noah laugh pretty regularly, but until this morning Noah has been so distracted by the camcorder that instead of playing with Chad he just stares in astonishment at the camera. But today I snuck in there like a wildlife photographer to catch him in action, unawares!

Enjoy!

Eggplant

I bought Noah a new toy the other day. It is what every child wants (I assume, since he can't talk yet): a stuffed eggplant.

What's that you say? It's not normal to buy your child an eggplant doll? How about having a cat named Entropy or microscopy pictures on the wall? Really? Shoot. He's doomed.

Luckily he is learning to comfort himself by sucking his thumb. He's been working on it a lot lately, but it looks funny because he often uses two hands.

I am not sure why he needs both hands, but Chad went in for the close-up to confirm that he is only sucking one thumb:

Success! We have thumb!

Brusha brusha brusha

Noah has started to chew on stuff (his hands, the bottle, etc), so I suspect he may be ready for teething-type toys. He's still too little to manipulate bulky toys, though. I may have found the perfect solution in a baby toothbrush. It's small and light and easy for him to hold on to.

And apparently delightful to chew. He spent a good part of the afternoon working on it.

Noah's drooling has also started to get out of control, so today we tried keeping a bib on him, thinking this would also help with spit-up mitigation. Here you can see how effective that was.

I do think Chad escaped unscathed, though...
